Australian Man Fights For Life After Slug-Eating Stunt

After Slug-eating stunt, the 21 year old Australian caught a disease called rat lungworm which is a very rare type of meningitis, according to Australian national broadcaster ABC.

The incident has led to health officials warning of the dangers of eating raw gastropods, or slugs and snails, which carry the parasitic worm. The disease causes the brain and spinal cord to swell and can be fatal.

However, Dr Jeremy McAnulty from New South Wales Health said most people recover from the illness because the body's immune system can get rid of it. Although It cannot be transferred from person to person.

The larvae of the parasite is only found in rodents' faeces, which many snails and slugs eat and then become infected.

Who ever is going to dare next time eating slippery creatures is advised by Dr McAnulty to wash them thoroughly first before eating. The rat lungworm is mainly found in Asia and the Pacific Islands.

Michael Blosil ended his life who is Marie Osmond's 18-year-old son on Friday after jumping from the balcony of his Los Angeles residence. Michael's roommate and his best friend were with him just before he jumped, and they talk about that night and remember their friend in an interview with In Touch Weekly.

In Touch released the following statement:

Just days after the shocking suicide of Marie Osmond's son Michael Blosil, his roommate and best friend are speaking out to In Touch. "I am completely crushed and taken by complete surprise," says his closest confidante, Ruth Ann, to whom Michael had written his last words.

Despite reports that he suffered from severe depression, his loved ones insist that Michael was always in good spirits. "He was so jolly all of the time. He's probably the funniest, happiest guy I've ever met in my life. It's something I would never expect from somebody like him," his roommate, Sean Srnik, says. "Michael was far from friendless. His smile was contagious, and the impact he had on even casual acquaintances was beyond description. We will all miss him very much," a grieving Ruth Ann echoes.

Sean, Michael's classmate at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in LA, adds that nothing seemed unusual the night the 18-year-old leapt to his death from their apartment balcony on February 26. "He walked in the door, and I was hiding behind the refrigerator. I popped out, and I was like 'Hey Mike!' and I gave him a hug. That's just how we are -- we joke around. Everything seemed fine, everything was just going as our daily lives go," he says.

According to Sean, Michael received a phone call at around 9:15 p.m. and left the room -- then the seemingly normal night spiraled out of control. "Ruth Ann ran in and asked, 'Where's Michael?'. We knew something was wrong. She grabbed the note and as soon as she started reading it, she started hysterically crying. I read the first three sentences of the note, and I realized exactly what was going on. While I was reading, she went to the balcony because she heard sirens. She looked down, and that's when she saw Michael," he hauntingly recalls, adding that Michael described his "last shower, last cigarette" and his and Ruth Ann's friendship in his handwritten letter, which he had placed on his bed for her.

Michael was pronounced dead after his 15-story jump immediately upon the fire department's arrival to the scene. Despite his grisly demise, Sean will remember Michael as a great friend. "He loved us all, and we all loved him," he concludes. Michael, who friends say was close with his superstar mother, Marie, will surely not soon be forgotten.

Bloom box station containing fuel cells that can run on anything from natural gas to the more renewable stuff, Bloom’s device has received the level of hype in Silicon Valley normally reserved for a new product from Apple.

For the past week, newspapers and websites have been filled with rumours about Bloom boxes, as the devices have been nicknamed, invented by former Nasa scientist KR Sridhar.

In bloom box the Fuel cells, which convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity by an electrochemical process, are a promising source of energy while emitting less CO² and other pollutants, as well as being much more efficient, than burning. But most modern designs use expensive materials, such as platinum, or corrosive chemicals that shorten their lifespan.

The central part which you may call heart of Sridhar’s bloom box is a thin fuel cell made from a plentiful resource, sand. The size of a floppy disk, it is painted with proprietary inks that allow the fuels to react with oxygen from the air, a chemical process that produces electricity.

A single cell can produce about 25W, enough for a low-energy lightbulb, and a stack of cells the size of a brick will power an average home. A single Bloom box, a unit the size of a chest freezer and which contains several stacks of fuel cells, will produce 100KW, enough for 100 homes.

According to Sridhar: “Compared to the US national grid, this is about twice as efficient,” he further added, “So your carbon footprint is about half. If you use a renewable fuel, you’re carbon neutral.” Sridhar has spent 8 years developing the fuel cells and has already sold the first units: the first customer was Google, which uses a Bloom box at its headquarters.

Well other customers include Walmart, Federal Express and Coca Cola. The former US secretary of state, Colin Powell, sits on the board and Bloom has received $400m from venture capitalists.

The Globe and Mail quoted agency head Pierre Bordry: “French judge (Thomas) Cassuto from the Tribunal de Grande Instance of Nanterre informed us that he had issued an international arrest warrant on Jan. 28 against Floyd Landis, who tested positive for banned testosterone during the 2006 Tour de France after our laboratory computer system was hacked."

Floyd Landis' troubles did not end when he was stripped of his Tour victory. His father-in-law killed himself in August of 2006 and his doping hearing became a PR nightmare when cycling legend Greg LeMond said he had been harassed -- and the exposure of his childhood sexual abuse threatened -- before he testified that Landis had implicitly confessed to steroid use. The threatening calls to LeMond were traced to Landis' manager.

Floyd Landis served his suspension for the steroid use, but late last year he left the cycling team he had joined in hopes of staging a comeback.

Windows Phone 7 Series, its name is hard-to-pronounce, and regrettably, the typical example of Microsoft's least good naming technique, lets suppose the straightforward fact that it's the extremely conventionaly phone since the iPhone. This phone which is about to be released should have been released by microsoft three years ago. In the same way that the Windows 7 desktop OS was just about everything people expected it would be, now Windows Phone 7 is nearly everything anyone could've dreamed of in a phone, let alone a Microsoft phone. So Phones are officially computers that happen to fit in your pocket.

Review of Windows phone 7

The design team created Windows Phone 7 on a number principles, including user typography, elegance and simplicity, authentically digital, motion, and developing a mobile OS that's clean, light, open and fast.

Windows Phone 7 is connected in the same sense as Palm's webOS and Android, with live, real-time data seamlessly integrated, though it's even smoother and more natural.

Windows Phone 7 is organized around a set of hubs: People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace, and Office. They're kind of like uber-applications, in a sense. People, for instance, isn't just your contacts, but it's also where social networking happens, with a real-time stream of updates from like Facebook and Windows Live. There has been no Twitter support announced yet, it appears a kind of serious deficiency, but one we're sure will be remedied by ship date.

A piece of interface that's shockingly not there in Windows Phone 7: A desktop syncing app. All of your contacts and info sync over the air. The only thing you'll be syncing through your computer is music and videos, which is mercifully done via the Zune client.

The People hub might be the best social networking application yet on Windows Phone 7: It's a single place to see all of your friends' status updates from multiple services in a single stream, and to update your own Facebook and Windows Live status. Twitter support. Badly. But you have neat integrations, like the aforementioned live tiles-if you really like someone or want to stalk them hardcore, you can make them a tile on your Start screen, which update in realtime with whatever they're posting. All of your contacts are synced and backed up over-the-air, Android and webOS style. Makes certain other phones seem a little antiquated with their out-of-the-box Contacts situation.

Microsoft's vision of Zune is finally clear with Windows Phone 7. It's an app, just like iPod is on the iPhone, though the Zune Marketplace is integrated with it into the music + video hub, not separated into its own little application. Oh, and worth mentioning, there will be an FM radio in every phone (more on that in a bit).

In Windows Phone 7 pictures is a little different though, and gets its very own hub. Of course, you have multitouch zoom and scrolling stuff too.

Gamers have talked about a portable Xbox for years-this is the most logical way to do it. The N-Gage was ahead of its time. (Okay, and it sucked.) The DS and PSP are the past. The iPhone showed us that the future of mobile gaming was going to be on your phone, and now that just got a lot more interesting.

In Windows Phone 7 the browser is Internet Explorer. Not to start. But it's not bad! Hey, least it's got multitouch powers right out of the box.

Naturally, Bing and Bing Maps are built into the Windows Phone 7 as the default search and maps services. They're nice. Bing's also used for universal search on Windows Phone 7, via a dedicated Bing button. And yeah, Office! It's connected to that cloud thing, for OTA syncing and such.

Now what is hardware issue in With Windows Mobile, a phonemaker handed Microsoft their monies, and Microsoft tossed them a software kit, and that was that. Which is why a lot of Windows Mobile phones felt and ran like crap. And why it took HTC like two years to produce the HD2, the most genuinely usable rendition of Windows Mobile ever.

Windows Phone 7 Series is, from what we've seen, exactly what Microsoft's phone should be. It's actually good. But there's a real, enduring question, Is it behind schedule? That's more than three years after the iPhone, two years after Android, hell, even a year after Palm.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Sunday’s schedule still includes a five-time gold medalist from Norway and a group of Americans making serious headway in two events traditionally dominated by Europe.

The biathlon and Nordic combined are afterthoughts in the U.S. — if they’re thought of at all — but that could change this year. NBC will broadcast some of each Sunday, a day that was supposed to be all about Vonn before her race was pushed back.
“We are not just medal hopefuls,” American Nordic combined skier Todd Lodwick said this week. “We are medal contenders.”

West palm beach implosion

A hurricane devastated high-rise in downtown West Palm Beach was imploded Sunday morning.

A loud noise of applause could be heard from the hundreds of onlookers who gathered downtown to watch the third-largest implosion in the United States.

Almost 3,000 sticks of dynamite were used to implode the building. Dust from the explosion was expected to flow towards the Intracoastal Waterway.

Bystanders began gathering downtown early Sunday morning while police cordoned off a 750-foot radius around the building.

As said by Lantana resident James Thompson. "You see it on TV all the time, but to see it live, you know -- I mean, I know it's Valentine's Day, and what better way to spend Valentine's morning than with your wife watching a building get blown up?"

Advanced Explosives Demolition has imploded more than 1,000 buildings in the last three decades and has a perfect safety record, as said by officials.

Dwellers in nearby areas were asked to switch off and cover their air conditioners to keep out the dust cloud from the implosion.

The implosion was behind schedule because after police discovered a man hiding in a stairwell at the Norton Park Place Condos at 1501 S. Flagler Dr. The individual was taken into custody without incident.

Before Opening Ceremony started at the Vancouver Games, Nodar Kumaritashvili from the country of Georgia lost control of his sled near the bottom of the swift luge course, crashing at full speed into a metal pole. He was given CPR on the site through a plastic tube, then lifted into an ambulance and rushed to a local hospital as an emergency helicopter hovered above.

Gruesome replays of the crash were being shown all over Olympic venues Friday afternoon, dousing enthusiasm for the torch relay and the run-up to the opening ceremonies. Later, in an apparent effort at damage control, the IOC invoked its copyrights on the crash video and removed it from YouTube - and several other Internet sites.

Warren Sapp's girlfriend claims that Sapp allowed her to sleep in his hotel room then came into the room early in the morning and pulled her out of bed. His girlfriend stated that they started arguing about guys she was hanging out with earlier Friday night.

Warren Sapp's girlfriend told cops that during the argument Sapp "grabbed her and began to choke her." He eventually threw her out of the room, she claims.

At the time when police spoke to Sapp, he said that he had allowed the woman to stay in his room but later on decided he wanted her to leave because "he was expecting company." He told police he was trying to help her and she fell.

Warren Sapp is in Miami for the Super Bowl and serves as an analyst for the National Football League Network and on Showtime's "Inside the NFL."

Warren Sapp is scheduled to co-host an event at BED Miami tonight. They tell us they haven't heard about the incident and, as of now, everything is still a go.

A 28-year-old Alvin man is charged for sexual assault of a child after an 11-year-old relative became pregnant and gave birth to a baby which DNA tests revealed to be his.

The girl told a family member the man had been having sex with her as often as three times per week for five years, according to the affidavit

Local Authorities began investigating the family Sept. 24 when officials with Alvin ISD discovered the child was pregnant, according to a probable cause affidavit from District Attorney Jeri Yenne’s office.

The girl and her baby are in the care of family members.

“The child is in a safe environment,” Brazoria County Sheriff’s Investigator Jeff Dandeneau said.

The baby was born in December and charges were filed after DNA matched, Dandeneau said. The man was arrested Tuesday and was at the Brazoria County jail on $200,000 bond.

The Police investigated the man and a 12-year old boy, and the boy consented to give a DNA sample for testing. The man refused, but DNA was obtained through a search warrant, according to the probable cause statement.

Aggravated sexual assault of a child is a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The Tigers are concentrating on the defensive line like never before, after including JC Copeland, a Tennessee commit, as well as Jordan Allen and Justin Maclin, who have yet to send in their letters of intent.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss each came away with a top in-state prospect on signing day.

Two of the most coveted undeclared players in that state were offensive tackle Damien Robinson of Olive Branch and receiver Vincent Sanders of Columbus.

Damien Robinson announced he was headed to Mississippi State, while Sanders said he was headed to Ole Miss.

The 6-foot-7, 320-pound Damien Robinson was rated the 10th best offensive tackle prospect in the country by ESPN's Scouts Inc. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Sanders was rated the 56th best receiver prospect.

Mississippi State now has six of the top 15 prospects, including three of the top four, while Ole Miss has five of the top 15 prospects.

Brion Carnes, a highly-touted quarterback out of Manatee High School in Florida, had been committed to Western Kentucky since the weekend.

Brion Carnes has reason his for the change. "Just the atmosphere," he told the Journal Star.

Carnes who is 18-years old had been the victim of an all-out "frenzy," as National Signing Day approached, according to a local Florida newspaper.

He is a four-star prospect and described as a "dual-threat quarterback."

Ladarius Phillips height is 6-foot-1, and weight is 265 pounds and played running back some in high school. Think about that one for a second. Rumor is he could play defensive tackle too.

Ladarius Phillips is in the fold. Ladarius Phillips is a FB/DT who made 4A All-State at defensive tackle and was apparently headed to Georgia Southern before getting an Auburn offer. I have to think he’s bound for DT at Auburn, and I also have to admit that this makes Byran Jones’s signing look a little less likely.

As stated by Scout, Phillips ran for 1,145 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. He was also a Class 4A All-State defensive tackle, where he performed 59 tackles and had eight sacks, leading Handley to the state semifinals.

Five-star footballer Keenan Allen, an elite safety who had verbally committed to Alabama in November, said this morning that he'll attend the University of California at Berkley instead.

Week leading up to National Signing Day, word began to get out that Allen was considering Clemson. Last weekend, he reportedly visited California with his half-brother, quarterback Zach Maynard, who decided to transfer from the University of Buffalo when head coach Turner Gill took the job as head coach at Kansas.. Penn State was even being mentioned as a possible destination for Allen, the nation's top-rated safety according to recruiting analysts for Scout.com and Rivals.com.

"If Turner Gill doesn't leave Buffalo we aren't having this conversation," said Otis Yelverton, who aided Allen during the recruiting process.

Yelverton said Wednesday that he has received death threats from Alabama football fans.

Keenan Allen's mother, Doria Lang, was asked if the family plans to move to California now.

"I don't know that yet," she said.

Lang and Yelverton had a Tuscaloosa News correspondent removed from the restaurant where the signing ceremony was held after the question about the family moving was asked.

Where does this development leave Alabama? Without tall Keenan Allen, the national champions slipped to No. 4 in the latest 2010 recruiting class rankings of both Scout.com and Rivals.com going into signing day. In fact, the latter service inserted archrival Auburn's haul at third overall.

"That'll perhaps reason the (message) boards to explode," Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Barry Every said before Allen's announcement at a downtown restaurant in Greensboro.

Prius Brake Problem - Toyota has one more problem to solve amid reports of brake problems with the popular Prius hybrid gas-electric car.

Toyota has been handling with massive recalls and plant shutdown related to a sticky accelerator in a number of its models.

Company executives in this week have announced a plan to go about fixing the problem which has sent the world's largest automaker's sales into a slump.

But Wednesday's news opens up a new set of troubles for the company. The Prius is not yet part of the recalls that extend to Europe and China and cover 4.5 million vehicles.

"The company is saying as of the end of last year they have received dozens of complaints about the braking system, but a report out of Japan, this is the Kyodo News Service, is saying the reports are more like in the hundreds," BNN's Mark Bunting told CTV's Canada AM.

"What the report suggests is that sometimes the braking system in the Prius can stop working on bumpy and slippery roads."

The Prius went on sale in Japan and the U.S. in May 2009.

In the U.S., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received more than 100 complaints about the brakes in the latest Prius model. Two of those complaints involved crashes that resulted in injuries.

Japan's Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry said Wednesday it had registered 14 complaints since July.

One of the possible causes of the braking problems, according to the Kyodo News Service, is that a sensor in the system that controls braking power receives a strong shock that causes a malfunction.

Typically, the result is a sudden reduction of braking power while slowing down on bumpy roads.

The Japanese transport ministry has ordered Toyota to investigate the problems.

The Prius has also taken some strong criticism from Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple. Wozniak, who owns four Prius hybrids, including a 2010 model, said he has had problems with the accelerator sticking while on cruise control.

He called the problem "very scary" on Monday while addressing a tech conference in California. He went off-topic to tell the audience he had raised the issue with both Toyota and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, but had received no response.

Boston Legal Star Justin Mentell dies in car crash

Justin Mentell, who was renowned for his role in the hit tv show Boston Legal, died in a car crash near Madison, Wisc., as reported by police. He was thrown from his Jeep after it careened down an embankment and struck two trees.

Justin Mentell who was only 27, was unfortunately not wearing his seat belt when car crashed around 9 a.m.. Although his airbag deployed, he was thrown from the car and died instantly.

Local coroner William Finley pronounced him dead at the scene after paramedics responded on a call from an eyewitness.

The Mid-West was hit hard by a snow storm and driving was hazardous throughout the region.

Justin Mentell played Garrett Wells on the hit ABC drama from 2005 to 2006. He also acted in films, mainly independent features, although he had a role in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced live-action/CGI family Disney movie, “G-Force.”

Justin Mentell had acting in his blood. He was born in Austin, Texas, and debuted on stage at 3-years-old as an orphan in Miss Liberty, and went on to appear in local theater productions, among them the musical Peter Pan

The family moved to Waukegan, Ill., and Justin Mentell joined the Northbrook Children’s Theater, where he continued to perform on stage. He attended Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he majored in acting.

He also took up speed skating, placing third at the Junior Olympics and eventually become a member of the U.S. Speedskating’s junior national long track team.

Girl Fights off Shark Attack

A teenage girl has told how she got away from shark attack.

Lydia Ward, 14, was in waist-deep water with her brother at Oreti Beach, on New Zealand's South Island, when the sea creature grabbed her hip.

She said she did not notice the shark until the attack was under way.

"I saw my brother's face and turned to the side and saw this large grey thing in the water, so I just hit it on the head with a boogie board," Ward told National Radio.

Explaining how she had read about a surfer who fought off a shark attack with her board, Lydia said: "That's what she did, and that's what you're meant to do."

The siblings fled from the water after the attack.

Lydia added: "I showed Dad and he didn't really believe me. But then I showed him my wetsuit, with all the blood coming out, and he believed me."

The girl's mother Fiona Ward said the shark's bite had ripped Lydia's wetsuit and penetrated her skin, but the teen did not need stitches.

Marine scientist Clinton Duffy said the shark was probably a broad-nosed seven gill shark.

The species grows to up to 10ft long and has attacked swimmers at the Oreti Beach in the past.

The last time such a shark preyed on a human there was in 1999, and the young girl victim required 60 stitches, the scientist said.

Lydia, a former competitive swimmer and regular beach swimmer, said she would be sticking to rivers and lakes in the future.
